My Favorite Podcasts for Nonfiction and Memoir Authors

As a nonfiction author, there’s a ton you can learn by listening to podcasts. Plus, you should get familiar with the medium, if you’re not already, so you can pitch yourself as a guest on relevant podcasts once your book comes out.

Here are a few of my favorite podcasts for nonfiction and memoir authors:

Totally Booked with Zibby, with host Zibby Owens. A hugely popular podcast with new episodes daily. Listen for inspiration, tips from popular authors, and insights about the book world. (And: Catch my interview on Zibby’s show here!)

The Creative Penn, with host Joanna Penn. Lots of great information, especially for authors publishing independently, and also book industry news, trends, and many specialized topics of interest to authors. Closing in on 1,000 episodes!

Let’s Talk Memoir, with host Ronit Plank. Fascinating interviews with memoir authors, including their reflections and tips for aspiring memoirists. If you’re working on a memoir, put this one on your list.

Book Marketing Action Podcast, with host Becky Robinson. Interviews with publishing experts and authors alike; covering many topics useful to nonfiction authors. Becky and I had a terrific discussion on her show - read about what we discussed and be sure to listen.

Don’t Write That Book, with hosts AJ Harper and Mike Michalowicz. Informative deep-dive discussions between the hosts on many aspects of writing, marketing, and publishing. Be sure to check out AJ’s book, Write a Must-Read, too.

#AmWriting, with hosts Jessica Lahey, KJ Dell’Antonia, and Sarina Bowen. This long-running show has tons of great content plus an active (free) Facebook group where you can ask questions and learn from the community.

The podcasts above are specifically for authors. They will help you learn about writing, marketing, publishing, and more.

But don’t stop there. Take a few minutes to search for podcasts related to your topic and add them to your listening queue, too. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the voices in your space, follow them, and highlight their work where appropriate.

And, since we’re talking about podcasts for authors, I have some exciting news: My own podcast, Nonfiction Unboxed, will debut soon. Be sure to follow me on LinkedIn or Instagram to catch the first episodes when they drop.

Happy listening!
